Put the page on a contrasting surface
Ruled white paper on a dark desk gives edge detection the clearest outline. A white page on a white table is the single most common reason automatic detection misses.

Kill your own shadow
Handwriting is usually thin and low-contrast, so a shadow across the page costs more here than on a printed document. Sit with the light to one side and keep the phone out of its path.

Capture the whole page square-on
Include all four corners and hold the phone roughly parallel to the paper. Ruled lines make any residual tilt obvious in the finished PDF, so it is worth a moment to line up.

Push contrast until the strokes are solid
Use Brightness & contrast to darken pencil and faint ink. Go far enough that the strokes read cleanly, but stop before the paper texture or the ruled lines start to turn into speckle.

Run OCR only if you need searchable text
OCR can pick up clear, separated printing. Cursive, cramped writing and mixed diagrams will produce errors. Treat the output as a rough draft to correct, not a transcription.

- Can the app read my handwriting?
- Partly, and honestly not reliably. OCR in PDF Scanner is Apple's on-device text recognition, which is tuned for printed type. Neat block printing often comes through; cursive, rushed notes, and anything overlapping a sketch frequently do not. The scanned image itself is always accurate — it is only the extracted text that is uncertain.
- My pencil notes come out grey and faint. What fixes that?
- Brightness & contrast. Lower the brightness slightly and raise contrast so the graphite darkens against the paper. Better light at capture time helps more than any adjustment afterwards.
- How do I scan a whole notebook?
- Capture pages one after another into the same document, reorder if a page lands out of sequence, then export once. The result is a single multi-page PDF rather than dozens of separate images.
- Should I export notes as PDF or JPG?
- PDF for anything multi-page or anything you will share or archive. JPG when you want a single page to drop into a chat or an upload form that asks for an image. Both are free and neither adds a watermark.
- Do my notes get uploaded?
- No. Capture, cleanup and text recognition all run on the iPhone using Apple's built-in frameworks. Note images are not sent to a server, so the app works offline.
