How to Scan a Book Page with Your iPhone

Open Book mode
Tap the scan button and choose Book. This mode expects a bound page rather than a loose sheet, so framing and cropping assume one page of a spread rather than a full flat document.

Flatten the page as much as the binding allows
Press the page down near the gutter with a finger or a clean weight along the outer edge. A paperback with a stiff spine will never lie perfectly flat, and the curve near the binding is where text distorts most.

Light the page from the side, not from above
Overhead light puts your own shadow across the page. Sit so the light comes from one side and keep the phone out of its path. Coated or glossy book stock also reflects, so indirect light beats a bright lamp.

Capture one page at a time
Shooting a full two-page spread means both pages curve in opposite directions and the resulting PDF page is half text, half gutter. One page per capture gives a straighter result and a PDF that reads like a book.

Straighten, then trim the gutter
Use Crop & perspective fix to square the page and pull the crop line just inside the binding so the dark gutter strip is not baked into the export. Brightness & contrast lifts yellowed paper and faint print.

Frequently asked
- Why is the text near the spine curved or unreadable?
- That is gutter distortion. The paper physically curves away from the camera near the binding, so the letters stretch and fall out of focus. Pressing the page flatter and moving the phone slightly toward the spine side reduces it. Perspective correction squares the page outline, but it cannot undo the curve of the paper itself.
- Does OCR work on scanned book pages?
- Yes for the flat middle of the page, and less reliably for the few centimeters closest to the gutter, where curvature and shadow degrade the characters. OCR supports auto-detect, Latin, Korean, Chinese (Simplified) and Japanese scripts. Always proofread text lifted from near the spine.
- Should I scan a two-page spread or single pages?
- Single pages. A spread doubles the gutter problem and produces a wide PDF page that is awkward to read on a phone. Single-page capture takes a few more taps and gives a much cleaner file.
- How do I avoid damaging the book?
- Do not force the spine open past its natural angle, and do not press down on the center of an old or tightly bound book. Capture at the angle the book opens comfortably and let perspective correction do the rest — an imperfectly flat scan is better than a cracked spine.
- Is my scan uploaded anywhere?
