How to Scan a Printed Photo with Your iPhone
Take the print out of the album or frame, lay it on a dark matte surface, capture it with PDF Scanner in Document mode, then crop to the image edge and export as JPG. The one difficulty specific to photo prints is the surface: glossy finishes mirror whatever is above them, including the phone and your own hands, so lighting from the side and shooting slightly off-axis matters more than anything you can adjust afterwards.

Take the print out of the plastic sleeve
Album sleeves and frame glass add a second reflective layer on top of an already glossy print. Removing the photo removes half the glare problem before you start.

Use a dark matte background
A dark, non-shiny surface makes the white photo border unmistakable to edge detection, and stops the background from bouncing light back into the print.

Light from the side, never from directly above
Overhead light on a glossy print lands straight back in the lens as a bright patch. Put the light source to one side and keep the phone and your hands out of the reflection.

Shoot slightly off-axis if glare persists
Tilting a few degrees moves the reflection off the print. Perspective fix squares the result, so a small deliberate angle costs nothing and saves the image from a blown-out highlight.

Crop to the picture, straighten, then adjust
Crop & perspective fix trims the white border and squares the frame. Rotate handles a print that went in sideways. Brightness & contrast helps color prints that have faded or shifted with age.

- How do I stop the reflection on a glossy photo?
- Move the light, not the settings. Glossy stock mirrors whatever is above it, so put the light source to one side, hold the phone slightly off-axis, and check the preview for a bright patch before capturing. A fully blown-out highlight has no detail left to recover.
- Is a phone scan as good as a flatbed photo scanner?
- For sharing, reprinting at normal sizes and building a digital archive of family prints, a well-lit phone capture is very usable. A dedicated photo scanner still wins on very small prints and on fine grain detail, because it controls the lighting completely and captures at a fixed high resolution.
- Should photos be exported as JPG or PDF?
