Flatten out the mail folds
Tax forms arrive folded into thirds, and the fold lines fall straight through the numbered boxes in the middle of the page. Press the sheet flat under a book for a minute before scanning, or hold the edges down with two fingers outside the frame. A shadowed fold across a figures box is the most common reason a scanned form has to be redone.

Shoot square, straight down
Tax forms are grids, and a grid photographed at an angle reads as visibly skewed no matter how good the crop is. Hold the phone parallel to the page and centered, and wait for the edge outline to settle before capturing. Then square any remaining tilt with Crop & perspective fix.

Light it evenly, not brightly
Overhead spotlights create a hot patch on one half of the form and leave the other half grey, which is much harder to fix than uniform dimness. Use indirect daylight or general room light and keep your own shadow out of the frame. Even coverage matters more than total brightness.

Lift contrast on carbon and dot-matrix copies
Carbonless duplicate copies and older dot-matrix printouts are light grey on pink, yellow, or blue tinted stock, and they scan much weaker than they look to the eye. Open Brightness & contrast and increase contrast until the digits are solid and separated. Back off as soon as thin strokes in the small print start breaking apart.

Check every figure, then export as PDF
Zoom to 100% on the exported page and read the amounts against the paper before sending anything — a 3 that reads as an 8 in a scan is a real problem. Run OCR if you want the text to be searchable inside the PDF, but do not trust recognized digits without checking them. Export all pages of a multi-page form as one PDF.
