PDF Scanner Get the app

Is there a scanner app that works offline?

Yes. PDF Scanner works with no internet connection because everything it does happens on the phone — edge detection and capture, cropping and perspective fix, brightness and contrast, OCR, and PDF or JPG export all run on the device using Apple's built-in frameworks. The only step that needs a connection is sending the finished file, and that is something you choose to do afterwards.

The short version

  • Capture, cropping, perspective correction, contrast adjustment, OCR and PDF or JPG export all run on the iPhone.
  • The app requires no network connection to produce a finished, watermark-free PDF.
  • Document images are not uploaded to a server.
  • No account is required, so there is no sign-in step that would need a connection.
  • OCR is on-device and covers auto-detect, Latin, Korean, Chinese (Simplified) and Japanese scripts.
  • Sharing or printing a finished file is the only step that involves a network or a nearby printer.
  • Requires iOS 16 or later.

Step by step

  1. Put the phone in airplane mode

This proves the point rather than taking anyone's word for it — and it is also a genuine use case on a plane, in a basement archive, or abroad without data.

  2. Scan the pages you need

Edge detection and capture behave identically offline. Nothing waits on a server round trip.

  3. Correct and run OCR

Crop and perspective fix, rotate, brightness and contrast, and text recognition all respond immediately with the radios off.

  4. Export the PDF

A complete, unwatermarked PDF produced with no connection is the whole offline workflow, finished.

  5. Share it when you are back online

The file sits on the device until you send it. Reconnect and share by message, mail or AirPrint whenever it suits.

Frequently asked

Does OCR need an internet connection?
No. Text recognition uses Apple's on-device frameworks, so it runs in airplane mode like the rest of the pipeline.
Why do some scanner apps stop working offline?
Because parts of their pipeline run on a server — commonly text recognition, image enhancement or file conversion — or because they require you to be signed in to an account. Both create a dependency on a connection.
Do I lose any features offline?
The scanning workflow is complete offline. What you cannot do without a connection is send the file to someone, which is true of any file on any device.
Is offline the same as private?
They are related but not identical. Working offline proves the processing is local; the privacy claim that matters is that document images are not uploaded to a server, which is what makes the offline behaviour possible.
Do I need an account to use it offline?
No. There is no sign-up before scanning or exporting, so there is nothing to authenticate against.

Scan it on your phone. Keep it on your phone.

PDF Scanner captures with automatic edge detection, straightens the page, reads the text on-device, and exports a PDF — free, with no watermark and no account. Your documents are never uploaded to a server.
