How do I scan book pages without damaging the spine?
Do not force the book open — capture one page at a time at the angle the book opens comfortably, using Book mode in PDF Scanner, and let perspective correction square the page afterwards. The trade you are making is explicit: a gently opened book leaves text near the spine curving into the gutter, and no scanner app fully flattens that. A slightly distorted inner margin is a much better outcome than a cracked binding.

Open the book only as far as it goes willingly
Stop at the angle where the binding is not under strain. Old, tightly bound and hardback books in particular crack when pushed to a flat 180 degrees.

Support the covers rather than pressing the centre
Rest the book on a table and hold or weight the outer edges. Pressing down on the middle of the spine is what does the damage.

Switch to Book mode and shoot one page at a time
A spread curves in two directions at once and yields a wide, awkward PDF page. Single pages take a few more taps and read far better.

Angle the phone toward the page, not straight down
With the book at a partial angle, tilting the phone to face the page reduces how much the inner margin falls away from the camera.

Light from the side to keep the gutter out of shadow
The valley near the spine collects shadow. Side light fills it; overhead light deepens it and adds your own shadow on top.

Square and trim the inner margin
Use crop and perspective fix to straighten, and pull the inner crop line just short of the binding so the dark gutter strip is not baked into the export.

- Because the paper itself is curved. Perspective correction is a flat-plane transform — it squares the page outline, but it cannot undo a physical bend in the sheet. Pressing the page gently flatter or shooting from a little further toward the spine side is what reduces it.
- Does OCR work on book scans?
- Well on the flat centre of the page, poorly in the curved band nearest the spine, where letters stretch and lose focus. Proofread anything lifted from the inner margin.
- Should I use a scanner instead of a phone for books?
- A flatbed forces the book flat, which is the very thing that damages bindings — it is a poor choice for anything old or valuable. Phone capture is gentler; a dedicated overhead book scanner is gentler still, but few people have one.
- How do I handle a very thick book?
- Prop the lower cover with a folded cloth or a second book so the page you are capturing sits roughly level, then shoot that page alone. Swap the support to the other side when you turn to the facing page.
